no crap, no pretentiousness, just 5 questions
Chiaroscuro (Skyline Transmission)
What inspires Chiaroscuro/Skyline Transmission to continue creating music?
Everything and anything around us…its all encompassing. Most members of our band are artists, three of us being tattoo artists. We are constantly surrounded by art and see music as another medium. We try to create music that inspires a feeling or mood that moves the listener.
Post Rock generates creative (and often lengthy) band and track names, how does Chiaroscuro/Skyline Transmission come up with these?
I don’t think we ever start a song with a name in mind. When we begin writing a new track we tend to let it flow in the direction that it organically transitions to. Usually by the end of the song we have a mental image that the track has inspired. From that we bounce our individual ideas off each other until we come to a title that fits the specific song.
How does Chiaroscuro/Skyline Transmission decide which tracks will be on a release? testing them at gigs, or a different method?
We are extremely picky, so one of the first things we do going into a practice session is jam and pretty much record everything. Ofcourse there are things that naturally fall away, so then we try and fine-tune the rest. From there we can generally tell what is workable. At the end of the day, it either is or it isn’t, we know what we like.
What have you been listening to recently that you would recommend to your fan base?
Some of the groups you may find in our iPods are Sunlight Ascending, Maserati, and Pelican. Most bands from Future Recordings label are great. The Cure is a steadfast band that never fails. Really anything that moves us, we are into all genres of music, not just instrumental.
The obligatory political question: Can politics (whichever side of the road) solve global social problems? Discuss
Well…..if there was such a thing as honest politics, sure. However this is not a perfect world, so you see where that leaves us.
The obligatory digital media question: We all know that digital downloads (legal or not) are changing the music business, would you say this is a challenge or an opportunity, and why?
I would say it is a reality and an opportunity. It levels the playing field. We write music for people to love, and if they are downloading it (even illegally) we must be doing something right.
