The Calm Blue Sea
What inspires The Calm Blue Sea to continue creating music?
There’s probably nothing really specific, but when things are going right and the crowd is into it, its obvious there is something greater than
ourselves at work. also see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqxcgPPdYwo
Your last release, The Calm Blue Sea, was a great success, what’s next?
We wrote a score to the 1924 Fritz Lang film, Siegfried…we’re releasing that score in August. Other than that more US touring this year. Then a new record and more touring next year.
Post Rock generates creative (and often lengthy) band and track names, how does The Calm Blue Sea come up with these?
The titles are usually inspired by things we read, things we see, and what the song means to us.
How does The Calm Blue Sea decide which tracks will be on a release? testing them at gigs, or a different method?
After we made the record we all just knew which songs would make it on there. There wasn’t really a method to figuring it out, somehow we all just agreed. That was the first and last time we all agreed on anything.
What have you been listening to recently that you would recommend to your fan base?
The Antlers. We Were Promised Jetpacks. Caddywhompus. The Rosewood Thieves. Cymbals Eat Guitars, Mono’s new one, The Who’s Live at Leeds is always good summer listening.
The obligatory political question: Can politics (whichever side of the road) solve global social problems? Discuss
No, but politics can make them worse and politicians don’t seem to help.
The obligatory digital media question: We all know that digital downloads (legal or not) are changing the music business, would you say this is a challenge or an opportunity, and why?
It’s definitely an opportunity. If it weren’t for digital downloads (both legal and illegal) most of the people that listen to our music would have no idea who we were. We have people contact us every day from all over the world that are into our music. We don’t have a record label or global
distribution and we’re able to reach people all over the globe. That’s pretty amazing.
