Ef
What inspires Ef to continue creating music?
Our everyday lives have always been our biggest inspiration source and we need to create to survive it. We work, we eat, we sleep… everyday, over and over again. We need a break from that and desperately get something out of us, so it doesn’t turn to depression.
We also enjoy the company of each other and as the trio we currently are feels like a very solid ground. We communicate, work and create very well together.
Post Rock generates creative (and often lengthy) band and track names, how does Ef come up with these?
Our track names aren’t that long and pretentious as many others (refer to Red Sparrows titles, hehe). We usually build the songs around our feelings or subjects – and we usually want the title to refer to the feeling of the song. Our titles are pretty short such as “Bear”, “Hello Scotland”, “A Tailpiece”, “K-141 KYPCK” etc etc…
How does Ef decide which tracks will be on a release? testing them at gigs, or a different method?
I think 87% of all songs we’ve ever created have ended up on a album. Usually we never play them live before we’ve recorded them. This is NOT a good thing since the songs tend to evolve the more time you play them live. When you feel safe with the song you dare to improvise and take it all one step further… But when you’ve recorded the song it’s like “done”. Next time we maybe need to go on a “try out and evolve-tour” before we go into the studio.
What have you been listening to recently that you would recommend to your fan base?
Personally I’m into Efterklang, Local Natives, The Antlers, Fandango, Yeasayer etc. Experimental pop with loads of drums. Can definitely recommend all their latest albums… And I would happily recommend everyone to check out the latest album “89” by Swedish masterminds “The Bear Quartet”. It’s a bomb!
The obligatory digital media question: We all know that digital downloads (legal or not) are changing the music business, would you say this is a challenge or an opportunity, and why?
We love the download idea. We were against having our songs on itunes etc about 5 years ago. We thought that people wouldn’t care and just download it illegally anyway. But now when it’s available there, people actually support us and buy our songs. Which of course is great, and help us to continue to create music.
And a small band like ours have probably got more recognition by spreading the albums for free, and not bothered to email communities and blogs to take our music “offline”.
Personally I’m a big fan of products like SPOTIFY. I think that EVERYONE should get it, pay for it, and enjoy all the music that’s available there. Soon also the EF albums![]()
