Inertia Blooms
What inspires Inertia Blooms to continue creating music?
If we didn’t we’d have to get real lives and grow up…
Your last release, ‘Cours, Camarade, Le Vieux Monde Est Derriere Toi’, was a great success, what’s next?
Another CD that is even more of a success! We’re writing some new tunes and firing them off all over the place. We’ve done two headline UK tours this year, and the next step is to get a tour support with someone bigger. What with having a home studio, the next CD might not be that far off, and may be called ‘The last CD was a great success’….
Post Rock generates creative (and often lengthy) band and track names, how does Inertia Blooms come up with these?
By spending too long in a van together, talking nonsense, and letting that nonsense turn into a running gag…. leading to new songs possibly called ‘Shank-Cam’, ‘Something, Something, Something, Moscow…’ and ‘Jealous Butchers’.
How does Inertia Blooms decide which tracks will be on a release? testing them at gigs, or a different method?
By putting all three tracks names into a hat, and pulling out the first three! Normally we get to the point where we have 3songs totalling 30mins and decide that’s probably enough for the next CD. We’ll usually play a few home town gigs in basementsto test them out live and make any changes that become blindingly obvious and then record. While touring in support of our latest EP we completely changed the end of ‘Mexican’t’ to make it a giant wall of noise, so Iguess when we do ‘the album’ if it gets on we can fix that on record.
What have you been listening to recently that you would recommend toyour fan base?
Buying our CD! In the last month or so between us we would say Weezer’s Blue Album, Cinemachanica, Bossk, Amplifier, Gasgiant, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters (which is the best jazz/funk album ever made) and cooking to Aphex Twin’s Druqks. If you haven’t heard some of those you will not be dissapointed.. Also, Thom Yorke recently posted a message on the interwebs with an alternative tracklist for ‘Hail To The Thief’, and the album flows better and is a much better album for it! Go listen to it now in this order…. There There, The Gloaming, Sail To The Moon, Sit Down. Stand Up, Go To Sleep, Where I End And You Begin, Scatterbrain, 2+2=5, Myxamatosis, A Wolf At The Door.
The obligatory political question: Can politics (whichever side ofthe road) solve global social problems? Discuss
Diplomacy can solve a large chunk of the current problems, but only where both sides are willing to talk. Northern Ireland for example, while still not perfect and rid of the distrust between people, has been made to work by getting people together and talking with both sides making concessions, whereas in Israel nobody is talking and all sides are taking harder stances. The idea of America under a forward thinking President (as opposed to one that doesn’t) is an exciting one, and it can’t hurt that his middle name is Hussein and his father was Muslim. It’ll be difficult for the extremists to portray him as a the white face of the Christian west shouting down at the Middle East, and the less people that get drawn to the extremes at bothends of the scale the better.
The obligatory digital media question: We all know that digital downloads (legal or not) are changing the music business, would you say this is a challenge or an opportunity, and why?
It’s an opportunity for us.. our last CD had over 5000 downloads worldwide on torrent sites and the like, and none of those people are likely to just buy an unknown bands without hearing them first. Sales of our latest CD have been way up on the first one, and this sort of exposure is the reason.
