Maybeshewill

What inspires Maybeshewill to continue creating music?

The four of us being in one city with instruments. While we’re here, we’d rather be doing this than not.

Your last release, Not For Want Of Trying, was a great success, what’s next?

We’re working on our new record at the moment, which will either be a full length or an EP – we’re not really sure yet. We’re self recording it again but i think we’re going to go to town with the production this time – We’re going to make a proper ‘pop’ instrumental record. Hopefully that won’t be as bad as it sounds.

Post Rock generates creative (and often lengthy) band and track names, how does Maybeshewill come up with these?

I don’t think we’re post-rock for a start – but we could argue about that for hours. That said, we don’t have many long song titles as such. Some are Jokey, some are pretty serious. We’re big fans of grammatical jokes and puns, so there are a few of those in there. Others are social or semi-political ideas, or thoughts on what we’re going through as a band. ‘Not For Want Of Trying’, ‘This Time Last Year’ and ‘Last Time This Year’ are all about how we’re progressing as a band – or not as the case may be.

How does Maybeshewill decide which tracks will be on a release? testing them at gigs, or a different method?

We’ve released pretty much everything we’ve ever written. There are maybe three or four songs that didn’t make the cut and never got past demo stages.I think we’re scrapping more stuff recently than we used to. I think thats a good thing – more quality control.

What have you been listening to recently that you would recommend to your fan base?

Death Of London, Her Name Is Calla, Minnaars, Diet Pills, Kyte, And So I Watch You From Afar, Worriedaboutsatan, Buenos Aires, Gallery 47 – Loads. Check our top friends on Myspace – Everyone in there is brilliant.

The obligatory political question: Can politics (whichever side of the road) solve global social problems? Discuss :)

Yes, but noones got the right answers yet. People, being people, tend to fuck it up.

The obligatory digital media question: We all know that digital downloads (legal or not) are changing the music business, would you say this is a challenge or an opportunity, and why?

Obviously it’s awesome that people can hear your music more easily, but we know we’ve only sold records to a handful of the people that regularly listen to our music. It’d be nice if those people that enjoy our music gave something back so we could afford to do something better with the next record! Releasing music even at our level costs a lot of money – that we usually have to borrow from other people.
