Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles

What inspires RafToM to continue creating music?

Our daily lives and shit happening in the world keeps us motivated to continue creating music. Our songs are all about something; sometimes the meanings are personal and other times the songs are about political or social issues. The need to express how we feel keeps us motivated.

Post Rock generates creative (and often lengthy) band and track names, how does RafToM come up with these?

Our band name was chosen kind of by accident. We played shows with a few different names and none really stuck. One night before a small gig, a couple of us were watching TV and stumbled upon a Chinese film called Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles. We liked the movie and decided to name ourselves after it for our upcoming show. People seemed to like the name, it stuck, and we have used it ever since. It wouldn’t feel right to go by any other name now.

How does RafToM decide which tracks will be on a release? testing them at gigs, or a different method?

The songs on our album were chosen just by what made sense to us. The songs are all different but they seem to work together better then other combinations of songs would

The obligatory political question: Can politics (whichever side of the road) solve global social problems? Discuss :)

Politics can solve problems if it weren’t for politicians. In our experiences it seems that politicians are only out for themselves and their cronies, not for the greater good of society.

The obligatory digital media question: We all know that digital downloads (legal or not) are changing the music business, would you say this is a challenge or an opportunity, and why?

Sharing digital music over the Internet is great because it gives people the opportunity to listen to bands that they may have otherwise not even known about. It lets bands get their music out to the people through a much broader scope a build a larger fan base. Musicians that bitch that they aren’t making enough money because of file sharing should find another profession; or at least reevaluate why they are making music in the first place.
